Drink Driving Victim Wins £700,000 Interim Payout

A woman who suffered life-changing injuries when a drink driver mounted the kerb and mowed her down on the pavement has won interim compensation of £700,000 so that she can move into a suitably adapted home pending final assessment of her £4 million damages claim.

The uninsured driver of the car which hit her was later sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving and drink driving. The woman suffered severe injuries to both legs when the car pushed her against a wall and her right limb subsequently had to be amputated.

Lawyers acting on her behalf made a compensation claim through the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB), the industry body which compensates victims of uninsured drivers. Liability was admitted in full and the court found that there was a real and present need for her to move out of her current rented home, which was damp and unsuitable for her. The interim award will enable her to purchase a £450,000 bungalow, which will require adaptations costing a further six-figure sum.
